What Horses and Therapy Do

Riding horses is a physical activity that can offer many therapeutic benefits. Many riders experience a connection to the horse that few sports can create. For those riders who can not walk, the horse is their vehicle of transport. Horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to human movement patterns of the pelvis while walking.

The rhythmic motion of the horse acts as a powerful tool to improve documented benefits of strength, flexibility and balance. Riding also brings mental rewards and improves cognitive abilities.

The benefits of horseback riding and other equine assisted activities are as numerous as the types of disabilities and conditions served. The therapeutic qualities of horseback riding are recognized by many medical professions, including the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association.

At Children of Promise Stable (COPS Barn)

• Professional Association Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International member center.

• PATH Intl. certified instructors evaluate and oversee lessons.

• Each individual has unique needs and goals. We tailor lesson plans to meet those developmental goals.

• We service participants ages 5 and up with a variety of special needs. COPS is a fully insured facility. All riders must return completed medical and waiver forms to us prior to their first ride. Upon receipt of these forms, an evaluation will be scheduled. Please click here to download and print "Participant's Application Forms".

• Our unique riding lessons are 7 days a week, March through December. Please contact us for program lesson dates and times.

• Lessons are scheduled on a "first come, first serve" basis.

• Refunds or make-ups are not given for classes canceled by the participant.

• Every attempt is made to conduct lessons, but unfortunately due to inclement weather or other circumstances, cancellations may occur. Lesson cancellations made by us will be made up.
